Brand New Day - Chapter 33

Part XIV

Chapter 33:

Uh.

My whole body ached. I could move though.

I thought when you are upgraded, you lose all control.

I felt something warm touch my arm, but it hurt to try and open my eyes, so I just listened.

“He is not taking to the upgrade,” someone said, I couldn’t pick out the voice though.

“I know, I know, but we need to think of something. The Head Director will not be pleased with this,” another said.

“Can we dispose of him and just hope no one notices he is missing?”

“They want him, so I think they will notice.”

“Hm…”

“Fine, let’s get him up and drive him somewhere away from here.”

“Okay.”

Wait, where are they taking me? What is happening? My head was spinning, I wanted to speak, but I couldn’t find my voice.

They then put me in a wheelchair and managed to keep me hidden. About ten minutes later, I was being shoved in the back of a Ford Explorer.

“Okay, so Greg, where are we going?”

“Florida?” Greg suggested.

“Sounds good to me,” the other guy said.

This was going to be a very long drive.

Luckily I was still drugged and groggy, so it was very easy to sleep.

Sleepily I began to open my eyes, it was daylight and I was in a bed.

Weird.

“He’s waking up! Doug hurry!” I am assuming it was Greg who shouted that.

“Seriously? Geez and I was just about to get breakfast.”

“What do we do?” Greg asked.

Doug shrugged.

“Uh…where am I?” My voice was raspy.

“We are in Bowling Green, Kentucky at the local motel,” Doug announced.

I sat up, “I thought you were taking me to Florida?”

“Wait how did you know that?” this came from Greg.

“I have ears you know.”

“Oh,” they both said at the same time.

I began to realize they looked a lot alike.

“Why did you take me?”

“Well…um…Dough you wanna answer?”

“We knew you weren’t taking to the upgrade and we know what the R.F.I. does to people like that, I couldn’t just sit there and let it happen.”

“Wow, I thought R.F.I. workers had no soul,” I laughed.

They chuckled as well.

“Yeah well we probably do not have jobs anymore, but that’s alright. We disagreed with what they were doing anyway. Oh by the way I’m Doug and that’s Greg; my twin brother.”

I knew they looked alike.

They both had dark red hair and freckles. They were fairly pale and had green eyes. They both reminded me of Lydia though. Even their clothes matched, both had a striped polo on except Doug’s was blue and Greg’s was green and both had loafers and khakis on.

I extended my hand, “Robert.”

“Oh well we only knew you as Specimen 303, so nice to meet you Robert.”

I nodded in response.

“So what will you guys do with me when we get to Florida?”

“Um…were not sure yet, but we do know we need to get that chip out of you ASAP. Even if it wouldn’t upgrade, they can still probably track it.”

“Oh,” I felt my new chip in my neck, thankful it didn’t work, but knew I had a new paranoia.

Which then reminded me of Sara and Lydia.

“Crap,” I said aloud.

“What?” they both asked, I think they will do that a lot.

“I have to go back, my friends are still there.”

“Look, let’s first worry about your chip first and then we can figure out what to do after that.”

I nodded.
